Balzar Architects is based in Valencia, where the studio was founded in 2018 and where most of its built work stands: private houses in the Valencian interior, renovations of protected apartments in the historic centre and the Eixample, offices, and residential developments near the coast. Valencia is also the base from which the studio directs its work in Madrid, the Balearics and the Gulf.
Houses in the Valencian landscape
Los Olivos House, in Quesa, is a 350 m² single-storey Passive House in the interior of the province. Casa Nova restores a masía in Moixent around a protected courtyard. In Puzol, the Alfinach development groups three single-family houses whose steel frame went up in fifteen days, because every decision had been taken in advance.
Protected buildings in the city
Much of the studio’s work in the city takes place inside protected buildings: a 300 m² modernist apartment (GE Apartment), a 475 m² duplex in a protected building of 1928 (1928 Penthouse), and an 1890 home in the old town (Ciutat Vella Apartment). The approach is the one set out in The building as palimpsest: the existing building is read before it is altered.
Offices and workplaces
The Expormim office and showroom is 240 m² of continuous oak and lime plaster. The studio’s own office in Valencia is built in steel, polished concrete and Iroko.
Working with the studio in Valencia
Projects in Valencia are directed by the founders and carried by a named project leader, with the same consulting engineers for structure and services used across the studio’s work. For how a commission is structured, see Commissioning a private house and What each phase includes.
