The cities we return to most often are almost always repetitive. Venice is a city of repeated palaces. The hutongs of Beijing are a fabric of repeated courtyards. The riads of the Maghreb, the arcades of Bologna, the shophouses of Penang. Repetition is one of the oldest ways of making a place. Singularity is the rarer condition.
The Mosque of Córdoba is the building that has taught us most about this.
Eight hundred and fifty-six columns hold the prayer hall. They are all the same column. They are all different. Marble fragments brought from Roman ruins, Visigothic capitals reused with their carving still legible, shafts of varying heights resolved through bases that equalise them, alabaster, jasper, granite. The masons obeyed an order and let the materials at hand speak within it. The result is one of the most coherent interiors ever built. The forest of columns reads as a single idea.
The rule produced the building. The difference is what happened when the rule met the world.

The same logic appears wherever architecture is made close to its material. The dry stone walls of Menorca, kilometres of identical technique with no two stones alike. The salt pans of Janubio in Lanzarote, geometry rigorously gridded, each basin different by the salt that crystallises in it, the light, the season. The Nubian arcades. The terraced agriculture of the Mediterranean coast. Repetition of rule, difference of circumstance.
When we work on a fragment of city, this is the lesson we try to keep close. A clear organisation, a generative system, a rule applied with consistency. Within that rule, the difference that the position, the orientation, the light and the material introduce. Diversity, in this understanding, is not designed. It is allowed. The architecture that lasts is the one that builds the rule and lets the difference happen.
Córdoba was not designed as a collection of distinct columns. It was designed as one column, repeated. The difference is the gift that time and matter made to that idea.
